Burial in a National Cemetery 
Any honorably discharged veteran is entitled to a grave space for themselves, their spouse and a dependent child in a national cemetery (except Arlington).  Also included with the grave space is the opening and closing of the grave, an outer burial container or vault and a Government headstone or marker, which is all at no cost to the family. For the veteran a burial flag is provided and military honors are rendered at the services. Cremated remains are buried or inurned in a national cemetery with the same honors as casketed remains.

Interments at the national cemetery are Monday through Friday only. Viewing facilities are not available at the national cemeteries. For safety reasons the committal services are held in a shelter area located away from the burial site. Burial will take place after the ceremony has concluded.

Todd Memorial Chapel will make all arrangements with the national cemetery at the time of need. The family does need to provide the mortuary with a copy of the veteran’s discharge paperwork, Form DD-214.

Burial in a Private Cemetery 
Burial benefits for the veteran buried in a private cemetery include a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag and military honors, which is at no cost to the family. There are not any benefits available to spouses and dependents buried in a private cemetery.

VA burial allowances are partial REIMBURSEMENTS of an eligible veteran’s funeral or burial expenses. To find out if you are entitled to any reimbursement you can call the Veterans Administration directly at 1-800-827-1000 or visit them online at www.va.gov.You can apply by filling out VA Form 21-530, Application for Burial Benefits. This form can be downloaded from www.va.gov/vaforms/. You should attach a copy of the veteran’s military discharge (DD-214), a copy of the death certificate and a copy of the funeral and burial expenses.
