Todd Memorial Chapel files a Form SSA-721, which notifies Social Security of a death. The family does need to contact Social Security directly to find out what death benefits are available for their individual circumstance, change any records necessary and also stop any automatic deposits the deceased was receiving. 

It is NOT necessary to order a certified death certificate for Social Security.
